Book Review: On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

I was stunned by Mary Karr’s memoir, the Liars’ Club. Not just by its ferocity, its beauty, and by her delightful grasp of the vernacular, but by its totality – she is a woman who remembers everything about her early years.

Book Review: On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

Thus starts a book that is part autobiography and part memoir of the way an aspiring author became Stephen King, as we know him of today. Divided in two parts, the first part of the book is more of an autobiography where King jots down memories of his growing up, a man's journey through childhood to his adulthood. He walks us through different stages of his life both as a person and as an author. In the second part of the book, King deals with What Writing Is. The lessons and tips on writing are equally interesting read. He explains what to write and what not to rewrite in a fantastic and lucid voice that is unique to King.

Unlike most non fictions, this book is a page turner. Read it if you are an aspiring writer. Read it if you an avid reader who wants to discover the growing up of one of the most prolific writers of our times.

... Because, like Stephen King, I would like to say, “Good books don't give up all their secrets at once.”

You can buy this book at amazon or at flipkart , in case you live in India.
